YouTube videos not playing on Android can be caused by a weak connection, a temporary app glitch, outdated software or a problem with one particular video. Before resetting your phone or deleting app data, work through the simple checks below. They help narrow down whether the issue is with your internet, the YouTube app or the video itself.
Quick Navigation
Identify the playback problem first
Notice what happens when you tap a video. A spinning circle usually points to loading or connectivity. A black player may be an app, device or video-specific issue. An error message can indicate a temporary service issue, account restriction or a video that is no longer available. Test two or three different videos before changing settings.
10 fixes for YouTube playback problems
1. Test another internet connection
Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or from mobile data to a trusted Wi-Fi network. If playback works on the second connection, restart your router or check your mobile data balance and signal. Avoid testing with a public network that requires a sign-in page.
2. Lower the video quality
Open the player settings, choose Quality and select a lower resolution such as 480p or 360p for a test. If the video starts playing smoothly, the original connection may not be able to sustain the selected quality.
3. Close and reopen YouTube
Leave the app, open Android's recent-apps screen and swipe YouTube away. Launch it again and retry the video. This clears a stuck playback session without removing your account or downloads.
4. Restart your phone
A restart can resolve temporary network, audio or app-process glitches. Save anything important first, restart the device and test YouTube again.
5. Clear only the YouTube cache
Open Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage and tap Clear cache. The exact labels vary by Android brand. Cache clearing is different from Clear data; do not choose Clear data unless you understand that it may reset app settings and remove local app information.
6. Update the YouTube app
Open Google Play, search for YouTube and install an available update. An older app version can have compatibility bugs that are already fixed in a later release.
7. Check Android system updates
Look under Settings → System → Software update or your phone maker's equivalent. Install stable updates when available, especially if other media apps are also behaving strangely.
8. Check date and time
Incorrect device time can interfere with secure connections. Turn on automatic date, time and time zone in Android settings, then reopen YouTube.
9. Check free storage
Very low storage can affect app performance and downloads. Keep some space free by removing files you no longer need. Do not delete unknown system folders or app data at random.
10. Test YouTube in a browser
Open youtube.com in your mobile browser. If the browser works but the app does not, focus on app cache and updates. If neither works, investigate the network, account or a possible YouTube-side issue.
How to fix a YouTube black screen or endless loading
First, check whether audio plays while the screen stays black. If it does, close other video or screen-overlay apps and restart the phone. If both picture and sound stop, test another video and connection. A single unavailable or restricted video may not be a phone problem. Avoid installing unofficial YouTube APKs from random websites as a quick fix.
When YouTube still will not play
If the same error appears across several devices and networks, it may be a temporary YouTube service problem. Check the official YouTube Help Centre and try again later rather than factory-resetting your phone. For more Android troubleshooting, visit ToolXON Android Tips.

Frequently asked questions
Why does YouTube keep loading but never play?
A slow or unstable connection, temporary app issue or a problem with that video can cause endless loading. Try another connection, restart the app and test a different video.
Will clearing YouTube cache delete my account?
Clearing cache normally removes temporary files, not your Google account. Be careful not to select Clear data or Clear storage unless you are prepared to reset local app information.
Why does YouTube work in Chrome but not in the app?
The browser and app use different app data and playback components. Update YouTube, clear its cache and restart the phone before considering more disruptive steps.
Menu names can differ across Samsung, Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO, Motorola and other Android phones. Use the Settings search bar when a path looks different.
