YouTube Videos Not Downloading? Fix Offline Download Problems

If YouTube videos are not downloading for offline viewing, first check whether the video is eligible for download in your region and account. Some videos require YouTube Premium, and not every upload can be saved offline. When the Download option is available but the process fails, connection, storage and account settings are the next things to inspect.

Check whether the video can be downloaded

YouTube offline downloads are available only in supported regions and for eligible videos. Some content requires Premium. Downloads are stored inside the YouTube app in an encrypted format; they do not appear as normal MP4 files in your phone's gallery. Use the official app and the account that has access to the download feature.

How to fix YouTube downloads not working

1. Check your internet connection

Use a stable Wi-Fi or mobile connection. If the download pauses repeatedly, switch networks and retry. Large videos may need a stronger, more consistent connection than ordinary browsing.

2. Check available storage

Open YouTube's Background & downloads settings or Android Storage to check available space. Remove old downloads or safe-to-delete files if the phone is nearly full. Higher-quality downloads use more storage and take longer.

3. Review Download over Wi-Fi only

If mobile data is being used while the app is set to download over Wi-Fi only, the download will wait for an approved network. Check YouTube's Background & downloads settings and choose the option that matches your data plan.

4. Confirm the correct Google account

Tap your profile picture and check that you are signed in to the account associated with your Premium membership or eligible downloads. A subscription on a different account will not unlock downloads on the account currently in use.

5. Check membership status if you use Premium

Open YouTube's Purchases and memberships section and confirm that the membership is active. If it recently renewed, access to saved videos may take some time to refresh. Follow the app's Retry download option when shown.

6. Restart YouTube and the phone

Close the app, reopen it and retry. If that does not help, restart Android. This can clear a stuck download queue without removing existing files.

7. Update YouTube

Check Google Play for an update and install it if available. Also make sure the app has permission to use the network and background data where required by your device.

8. Check device limits and download availability

Premium offline features have device limits, and availability can differ by location and video. If the same account has reached a device limit or the video is no longer eligible, repeated retries will not solve it.

Why is the Download button missing?

The creator or rights holder may not have made the video available for offline viewing, the video may be restricted in your region, or the feature may require Premium. A missing button is not necessarily an app fault. Do not use unknown third-party downloader sites or apps as a workaround; they can expose you to misleading ads, unsafe downloads and copyright problems.

Frequently asked questions

Why does YouTube say Download unavailable?

The video may not be eligible for offline viewing in your location or may require Premium. Some videos cannot be downloaded at all.

Why are downloaded videos not in my Gallery?

YouTube stores offline downloads inside its app in an encrypted format. They are intended to be played in YouTube, not opened as normal gallery videos.

Will clearing YouTube data delete downloads?

Clearing storage/data or reinstalling the app may remove local downloads. Do not do this unless you are prepared to download eligible videos again.

Download availability, membership requirements and offline time limits vary by country, video and account. Check the official YouTube help page for your region.
