A YouTube update failed on Android message can appear as Pending, Can't update, Downloading or an installation error in Google Play. The issue may be related to the Play Store queue, low storage, a weak connection or a temporary Google Play problem. Use the checks below before trying to remove system apps or install an APK manually.
Check before updating YouTube
Confirm that the phone is connected to a stable Wi-Fi or mobile network, has enough free storage and is signed in to the expected Google account in Play Store. If several apps are stuck on Pending, the problem may be with Play Store or the network rather than YouTube itself.
How to fix YouTube update failed
1. Check the Play Store download queue
Open Google Play and review pending downloads or updates. Pause or allow other updates to finish, then try YouTube again. A long queue can make one app appear stuck.
2. Switch to a stable connection
Try a trusted Wi-Fi network or mobile data. If you use a VPN, proxy or restricted network, test once with your usual direct connection. Avoid changing multiple network settings at the same time.
3. Check available phone storage
Open Settings → Storage and check free space. Remove safe-to-delete files or unused apps if the device is nearly full. Do not delete unfamiliar Android folders.
4. Restart the phone
Restart Android, reopen Play Store and try the update again. This can clear a stuck download process.
5. Clear Google Play Store cache
Open Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Storage → Clear cache, then reopen Play Store. Menu names vary. Clear cache first; do not clear Google Play services data or remove your Google account as a routine first step.
6. Check date and time
Enable automatic date, time and time zone in Android settings. An incorrect clock can interfere with secure connections and store operations.
7. Check for Android system updates
Install a stable system update if one is available and your device has enough battery and storage. If the device is managed by an organisation, update policies may be controlled by its administrator.
8. Retry later if Play Store is having a wider issue
If other apps also fail to update, wait until the store connection is working normally and check Google's official support guidance. Repeatedly tapping Update will not fix a service-side interruption.
What if YouTube came preinstalled?
On many Android phones, YouTube is a system app. You may not see a normal Uninstall option; the App info page may instead offer uninstall updates, Disable or Enable. Do not disable system components at random. Use Google Play to update the app whenever possible, and follow your device maker's instructions if the update option is unavailable.
For broader app problems, see Google's official guide to fixing Android apps that won't open or work properly.

Frequently asked questions
Why is YouTube update stuck on Pending?
Another app may be updating first, the connection may be unstable or Play Store may be temporarily stuck. Check the queue, restart the phone and retry on a reliable connection.
Can I update YouTube without Google Play?
Use official update channels available for your device. Avoid unofficial APK sites because modified or outdated packages can create security and compatibility risks.
Will uninstalling YouTube updates delete my Google account?
It does not normally delete your Google account, but it can roll the preinstalled app back to an older version and reset app behaviour. Update it again through Google Play when possible.
Play Store labels and system-app options vary by phone manufacturer, Android release and region.
