A YouTube buffering problem on Android can interrupt videos even when other apps seem to work normally. The cause is not always your internet speed: Wi-Fi interference, background downloads, high playback quality, a full app cache or a temporary service issue can all affect streaming. Use these checks in order so you can find the bottleneck without changing unnecessary settings.
Quick Navigation
Why does YouTube keep buffering?
Streaming needs a steady connection, not just a high speed-test result. A phone may have a strong Wi-Fi icon but still suffer packet loss, congestion or interference. Other possibilities include a router issue, mobile data limits, a high-resolution video or a temporary problem on YouTube's side.
9 ways to reduce YouTube buffering
1. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data
Play the same video over a different connection. If mobile data works but Wi-Fi buffers, restart the router and move closer to it. If Wi-Fi works but mobile data does not, check signal strength, data balance and any data-saving restrictions.
2. Lower the playback resolution
In the video player, open Settings → Quality and test a lower resolution. Higher resolutions need more consistent bandwidth. Use Auto quality again after the connection becomes stable.
3. Pause other downloads and streams
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates and other streaming sessions on your network. These can compete with YouTube for available bandwidth.
4. Move closer to the router
Walls, floors, metal objects and nearby wireless devices can weaken Wi-Fi. Test near the router. If the signal improves there, adjust the router's location or use a more reliable access point.
5. Restart the router and phone
Power-cycle the router using its normal restart process, then restart your phone. Wait until the network is fully connected before opening YouTube.
6. Clear YouTube's cache
Go to Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage → Clear cache. The wording varies by phone. Clear cache first; clearing storage/data is a more disruptive step and is usually not needed for a basic buffering issue.
7. Update YouTube
Check Google Play for an available update. Also install pending Android system updates when practical. If the issue began immediately after an update, note the version and check official support discussions before trying unofficial app packages.
8. Turn off restrictive data settings for the test
Check Android Data Saver, Battery Saver and YouTube's mobile-data permission. Temporarily allow YouTube to use data in the background, then test again. Re-enable restrictions you prefer after identifying the cause.
9. Check whether other devices are affected
Try YouTube on another phone or computer using the same Wi-Fi. If every device buffers, investigate the router or internet provider. If only one device has the issue, focus on that phone's app and settings.
YouTube buffering even with fast internet
A speed test measures a short connection to one test server. It does not guarantee a steady route to every video server. Test at different times, compare Wi-Fi with mobile data and check whether only high-resolution playback struggles. YouTube's own troubleshooting guide recommends trying another connection and clearing the app cache when videos buffer or load slowly: YouTube streaming troubleshooting.
If many apps and websites are slow, contact your internet provider. If only YouTube is affected across devices, it may be a temporary service or routing issue; avoid factory-resetting your phone as a first response.

Frequently asked questions
Why does YouTube buffer only at 1080p?
Higher resolutions require more sustained bandwidth. Try 720p or 480p and compare. If lower quality is smooth, the connection may not be stable enough for the higher setting at that moment.
Does clearing cache improve YouTube speed?
It can help when temporary app files are corrupted, but it does not increase your internet plan speed. Treat it as one troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed performance boost.
Should I change my DNS to stop buffering?
Changing DNS is not a universal fix for video buffering. First test another connection, pause competing traffic and restart your router. Avoid changing network settings you cannot easily restore.
Android and router menu names vary by manufacturer and software version.
